There are a lot of 3D animation programs out there. I've chosed Blender for us to work in.
Blender is free and open-source. It has pretty well all the options and bells and whistles of any of the other "big" software packages has.
Maya has a pretty good rendering engine. But you can do photo-real 3D rendering in Blender. So I'm not giving Maya the advantage in rendering by much.
3DS Max is nice too. And so is Cinema 4D and a million other programs out there.
But the fact is we can do fine work in Blender. We can use it on Macs, Linux, and PC's.
And it's free.
